Over the weekend Queenslanders turned out to vote in their new amalgamated region or super councils. By far the most entertaining contest was the Brisbane City Council race but this is hardly surprising. Although I did have to check out the results for the Townsville and Cairns races. They can be quite interesting from time to time.
And Newman has easily kept the Mayoralty over Labor and the Greens. It was interesting to see the Greens maintain a positive trend and reflected their recent results in state and federal polls. Many political commentators predicted the Liberals to retain the Mayor’s spot prior to the Brisbane polls. Interestingly the Liberals seem to have picked up nearly double the seats of ALP and completely reversed the power in the Council from the ALP to the Liberals.
The election campaigns for Townsville and Cairns played out rather predictably in most cases. Aside from a couple of ‘upsets’ it was pretty much business as usual. A major exception is how most candidates utilized the Internet much more in their campaigns. When I stood for Council elections in Burnett Shire I was the only candidate using the Internet as a campaign resource. Two elections on and there has been a substantial growth in Internet use, albeit some of it being very amateurish.
But back to the Brisbane City Council races.
With it looking like Queensland voters bucking the trend to vote ALP it will be interesting to see how the Liberals deal with being in power in only one place throughout the whole of Australia. Although whether the new Liberal power bloc will actually deliver on their election promises is a completely different issue. Well of course if the Liberals gain power of the Council.
Keep an eye on the results by visiting Queensland’s Electoral Commission.
