A new political party has formed in Western Australia. The new political party already has a wealth of resources at its fingertips with a former Liberal power broker and the WA Family First Party getting together. But the new political party sounds not too dissimilar from the Family First Party. And the name for the new party is WA Family First dot com.

It’s now tapping into the growing pentecostal movement activating for political purposes. The new party claims that they’ll be at the ready for the up coming state elections. It will be interesting to see how the new party goes with the cut and thrust of WA’s political landscape.

The WA Liberals will probably see this is as a handy boost to their ailing support. Labor will try to suck up to the WA Greens for their preferences as the Premier, Carpenter turns out to have many similar traits with Liberal Opposition Leader, Buswell. The WA Greens will again be attempting to show voters that they can shift from digging up resources and burning gas and coal to renewable energy and see growth in jobs and prosperity.

Undoubtedly the old machine-driven parties will try to claim ground on economic management rather than the real issues of climate change, water, ecological biodiversity, health and education. The addition of WA Family First dot com will pick up the more extreme right-wing fringe. But will they preference the Liberals?

At what of the Nationals? Who knows what’s happening with the Nationals. They seem to be a dwindling force in politics. They continue to hang around as a reminder of the old ways but they’re traditional political ground has been swallowed up by the Liberals and the ALP to a lesser extent.

But WA Family First dot com will predictably attack the Greens and ALP on their progressive policies, but I think in the effort to establish themselves as a new “political force in WA politics” they’ll probably go for the populist issues to campaign on. It will be interesting to see how they’ll differentiate themselves from the Liberal party. They’ll also tap into the redneck element and take up from where Pauline Hanson left off.

Western Australian politics just got even more interesting. But is it really a new political party or just a re-badged, re-launched Family First?
