Outgoing Australian Democrats leader, Lyn Allison, must have rocks in her head. Or she’s very bitter about the Democrats being marginalized to only having representation in South Australia.
If you haven’t heard, Ms Allison is leaving the Senate at the end of the week but on her way out she’s decided to take a few parting shots. Her parting shots are of course aimed at the Australian Greens who she obviously blames for the Democrats’ gradual demise over the past 10 years. In an effort to sound like they’re a political force on the rebound, Allison has been claiming the Greens will be difficult to negotiate with and there may well be the prospect of a double dissolution.
But is she really serious? It would seem so but the really disappointing thing is that she resorted to referring to teh Greens as being ‘extreme’ which is the catch cry of Family First. The irony is that the Greens have never been ‘extreme’, they’ve just had truly progressive policies. It shows the desperation of the party that it’s founder declared would “Keep the Bastards honest”. The reality, sadly for Don Chipp, is they didn’t keep the bastards honest but went along with the bastards (Labor or Coalition).
The interesting part isn’t necessarily the venom spat at the Greens, this is to be expected from the established cronies like Lyn Allison, but the fact that the Democrats are in talks with micro-parties about establishing a new party. Natasha Stott Despoja said it best when she said that there is a place for a political party like the Australian Democrats.
The Australian Democrats have run out of puff and I seriously doubt that anything viable will result from the supposed talks for a new party.
