Alexander Downer has finally announced his retirement from federal parliament for a cushy international diplomatic posting (and with the full blessings of Rudd). Downer was never a spectacular political player, somehow reaching the dizzying heights of Opposition Leader after the Hewson experiment. But since then he’s been a significant Liberal figure.
