The Iranian situation continues and there still remains not nearly enough international attention or urgency.  While there remain human rights abuses, the international community seems to be remarkably silent.  And like the international community’s silence about human rights abuses in other countries [insert your choice of despotic regime], the silence on Iran’s abuses is deafening.

So many people reportedly arrested and detained for taking part in the recent protests and demonstrations and there are any number of rumours of people being arrested and sent to secret locations for interrogation.  There needs to be greater efforts by the international community to pressure the Iranian government to restore human rights.

The Iranian government itself can do much more to mend bridges with the international community by releasing those arrested post the election result.  Surely the government wants to restore it’s own credibility with citizens and by releasing the arrested bloggers, trade unionists, teachers, students, mums, and dads etc it would help create a space to restore peace and good government.  The government must respect its own constitution, which protects political demonstrations and a free media.

I continue to stand in solidarity with the Iranian people in their fight for human rights.  And to show my solidarity repeat the message from my “Human rights and Iran” post:

I stand in solidarity with the citizens of Iran in their fight to restore their human rights and their efforts to resist state bans on free speech and freedom of association.

I, like millions of others, call on the Iranian government to respect the country’s constitution and restore human rights for all Iranians.  And I call on the Iranian government for the immediate release of all detainees arrested in the post-presidential election upheaval.

I also call on the Australian government to continue working towards diplomatic outcomes and support non-government organisations’ humanitarian efforts.

Please feel free to pass this message on so that it might reach the remaining free Iranian blogger community.
