I was encouraged to write this particular post about my recommended iPhone applications after reading an open request for it through Twitter (and more specifically the request came from @SilkCharm). So I started to think about the kinds of applications I have on my iPhone and why I actually downloaded them.
Given that I spend an inordinate amount of time engaging in online activism, the iPhone applications I’m recommending really reflect their use for online activism. For me the following applications are definitely worth recommending:
- Tweetie: Excellent Twitter application. I find it intuitive to use and a reliable application. The ability to quickly post/repost tweets and include pictures/GPS location makes it a great application to use. It has an easy interface to use and allows for multiple Twitter accounts to be registered. COSTS
- Facebook: I frequently update my Facebook status and respond to those of others. This application is easy to use and has a pretty simple interface to navigate the application. FREE
- MySpace: Like Facebook I also track what is happening with my peeps on MySpace and to post bulletins. The interface used for this application is markedly different from the Facebook application, however it is still very intuitive to use and easy to navigate. FREE
- WordPress: An easy to use application which is quite a powerful tool to blog on the go. Having the capacity to blog while out and about at rallies or community/public meetings is a powerful way of engaging people in the issues I speak out about. The ability to save drafts to work on at a PC/laptop is a very useful feature. FREE
- ABC: Um what can I say, being involved in politics means I’m somewhat of a news junkie. The application provides an easy to use and attractive interface to access the main features offered on the ABC news website. It has the full version of the articles available through the application, including access to videos. FREE
- WotNews: A news aggregation site that offers this useful application that collates the latest news covering an extensive list of categories. Easy to use and navigate. There is also the additional benefit of joining up that gives you direct access to your favourite categories. FREE
- Skype: Enough said really. FREE
- Google: This application is like Google Gears but for iPhone. It’s very functional and connects me to my entire Google suite of applications. FREE
- Documents 2: Allows you to store files on your iPhone and then to send them. A very handy feature that has allowed me to email pictures while out and about instead of uploading them to Facebook, MySpace or Twitter. FREE VERSION
- PhotoSharp: One of the annoying features of the camera on the older iPhones is the lack of clarity of some pictures. This application lets you sharpen up pictures before sharing them. I’ve found it handy as I like to take pictures to include in tweets and live blogs. FREE VERSION
- Camera Zoom: As the name of the application suggests, it lets you zoom in and out on the older iPhone’s camera. Again this has been a handy application when you’re just a little too far from the action; and need to zoom in. FREE
- iChess: Because I don’t just live a life of politics and political activism, I like to play chess. It’s a great game to play while waiting around or on flights. The AI is updated frequently enough to keep you on your toes; just when you think you’ve got it beat each game. FREE VERSION
- Lightsaber: This is a vanity application I download and love playing with because I’m an avid Star Wars fan. It’s an application that turns your iPhone into a Star Wars lightsabre with a choice of characters to choose from and an option to make up a customised Jedi and lightsabre. Great fun to swing around.
- Galaga Remix: I remember spending way too many 20c pieces at the games arcade or down the local shop playing Galaga. When I found this application I downloaded the free version immediately. You can play either the original classic or a re-mastered version. It’s heaps of fun but the controls are clunky. FREE VERSION

Thanks for your comment Sarah. I’ll check out iWound. I have a couple of electronic books for iPhone too but didn’t want to bore people with my selection. Maybe I can do a blog about the iPhone e-books I have
