Our current way of dealing with Indigenous young offenders is not working and it’s time to take a whole new approach, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma, will tell a major conference on Indigenous young people, crime and justice in Sydney on Monday (31 August). Commissioner Calma will tell the audience that a 27 percent increase in the Indigenous juvenile detention rate nationally between 2001 to 2007, should sound alarm bells for all jurisdictions.

An invitation to review

I’ve enjoyed bringing my thoughts and ideas; rants and raves to a broader audience. There has been an interesting range of response either through the comments or via other back channel methods. But then I’m a little biased so invite you to review it too.

Now this isn’t the first time I’ve blogged about stolen wages, and you can rest assured knowing it won’t be the last time either. On this particular occasion it’s the issue of Queensland’s stolen wages. Just to fill you in; in 2002, former Premier Beattie estimated that up to $500 million in wages could have been stolen from Aboriginal workers over the years and offered just $55 million in reparations.
