Polling tips big swing against Labor in by-election – ABC News
The by-election in NSW for the state seat of Penrith is probably not huge news although it is proving to be quite the topic for the election addict. With any by-election there is a tendency for the electorate to swing against the encumbent, and this is compounded by an electorate sick to death of the government and the Labor Party.
Like any by-election, it will be a mixed bag of local and state issues, and the Labor candidate will be under significant heat to prove to the electorate they are up to the task and not a clone of the shamed outgoing Member for Penrith. Whether or not it is an indicator for the 2011 election is a little over-the-top in my opinion, as by-elections are not reflections of general elections. There are a bunch of unknowns and it is difficult to really assess how much of a backlash will be recorded against the Labor Party. Given how far out this by-election is, any damage from a massive backlash can be worked through if Keneally is able to maintain her personal popularity and keep improving the NSW Labor brand.
