Victorian Government treading foolishly
The newly minted Victorian Liberal-National government is already off on the wrong tracks. And they’re doing it in a big way. They have proven to have little leadership in the areas in which they were claiming to have in the election. But let us look at what has been said and done since the new government has been elected.
This list is in no particular order:
- It has wound back environmental protection of the Alpine regions;
- It has re-opened duck hunting, even looking to extend the ‘season’;
- They’re looking to cancel Myki [an extremely expensive and late ticketing system for public transport];
- Metropolitan rail services will extensively favour the eastern and south-eastern suburbs;
- Rail infrastructure projects in the west are expected to be scrapped;
- There are rumours that a dam for Maribyrnong is being considered;
- The arrangement on health with the federal government looks at risk; and
- They’ve said no to the National Broadband Network.
I’m sure this is in no way an exhaustive list and that others can add to it.
What it shows is that so far is that the Nationals are driving Liberal Party policy when it comes to the environment. Any credibility the Liberal Party had about protecting the environment is quickly fading.
Although it seems like the Baillieu government is quickly finding out that it’s lack of policy detail is coming back to bite them.

I’m totally against shooting ducks.

They’re already cutting the precious remnant of public transport in rural Victoria. Bendigo’s train service is replaced by a bus, and the busses here (Kyabram) are being reduced or cancelled.
It’s not like we didn’t know what to expect. Ted served with Jeff.
Victoria’s housing affordability and availability is in absolute crisis. People could be moving to rural areas but Ted toenails is true to form. Without public transport or infrastructure investment no one will. We’re getting Jeffed all over again.

Yes that’s the thing. We all knew what to expect when Ted was unable to articulate a policy position, and reverted to well worn mantras of being tough on crime and being tough on crime.
His government will only extend the boundary of Melbourne so that places like Wallan fall within ‘Melbourne’ but such places will be devoid of the social infrastructure required to make them liveable.
You’re spot on when you say we’re getting Jeffed all over again.

I totally agree with you Adam. I can only hope they’re headed down a slippery slope of being a one-term government.
Cheers

Given their wafer-thin majority, blocking initiatives that are popular with most Victorians, like the NBN and the Federal/State health-funding proposals, seems like a suicide mission to me. I certainly hope so!
